Jim Hudson’s Northern Wisconsin Guide Service
Bobbin for Lakers in 160’ of crystal clear water on 6-8” of ice off of the shores of Madeline Island. This is the place where all souls of dead fisherman come. The Apostle Isles off the shores of Bayfield WI is the closest place to paradise you’ll ever find in Wisconsin. If you plan on fishing for lake trout on Lake Superior you have only a few choices for guides in the area. Jim Hudson’s on the spot guide service is at the top of the list. Fishing with Jim is like having a human tracking beacon for a fish finder. And with his ancestry Native American blood Jim is a natural when it comes to finding fish.

The best way to travel long distances on ice is definitely on Jim’s artic cat bearcat long track snow mobile. I chose to use my Yamaha Grizzly and it tagged along just fine. It did get a little spooky crossing the wet areas. It took me a while to shake the idea of traveling at high speeds on 6”of ice between me and 160’of water. Tony Boshold, Jim and Hannah Hudson, Capt. Craig Putchat and two of his friends managed to hook into several good sized lake trout and one splake lost at the hole. The pictures courtesy of Hannah are worth a thousand words. Using the odd shaped lures with cut bait was a new experience for me, one that I will never forget.
I have to admit I prefer catching the big small mouth this lake has to offer. On a trip a couple of years ago Tony and I managed to catch several and even witnessed one whitefish caught by Greg Wilczynski. In his words, it was a “beautiful silver torpedo”. All of us have places that are a must each year. Bayfield WI and Lake Superior are on the top of the list of places for me.
For those of you that think ice fishing is for crazy people but still want to visit the most pristine area in the Midwest you can fish for all kinds of huge fish in the open water. Depending on the time of year Jim can put you on Pike, Walleye, Lake Trout, King Salmon and the biggest bronze small mouth bass you have ever seen. If you plan on making the trip up to Bayfield ask Jim for recommendations on accommodations. They have everything to offer from fully furnished homes, cabins, B & B and hotels. Some of the places to stay are right on the water with beautiful sandy beaches. If you decide to take the family there is plenty to do while you are there.

In our most recent trip in August 2006 we were fortunate enough to meet some of Jim’s friends and family for his 28th Birthday party. Thanks Jim and Hannah for the hospitality.
